What TOEFL score do you need for Emory University?

Emory is test optional for the 2026 to 2027 undergraduate cycle, and applicants who submit scores may self-report or send official SAT, ACT, TOEFL and IELTS results. The undergraduate page gives 5187 as the SAT and TOEFL code, and also lists a TOEFL ITP expectation of CEFR C1.

Laney Graduate School uses the same institution code, 5187, with no department code needed, and tells applicants to ask their programme about TOEFL questions. The Computer Science MS will decide on unofficial scores, but admitted students must then send official scores through ETS.

For comparison, the undergraduate page expects an IELTS band of 7.5 and the Computer Science FAQ sets IELTS 7 as its minimum.

Because the undergraduate figures are expectations rather than cutoffs, a lower score is not an automatic rejection, but the page gives no conditional route. The Computer Science MS exempts graduates of accredited US institutions and of institutions where English was the main medium of instruction.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Emory programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
