Validity and exemptions

IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic scores are valid for two years and must remain valid for at least one month after the application deadline. EMU also accepts Estonian, Finnish and Latvian state exams in English at B2, tests taken at the University of Tartu or TalTech by applicants already in Estonia, and an IB Diploma completed in English.

The page says the only exemptions are secondary or higher education completed in English in an EU/EEA state, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. You must have lived in that country while studying, and offshore campus study does not qualify.

English-taught programmes and how to check

EMU's study page lists the English-taught options: the integrated Veterinary Medicine programme, a master's in Landscape Architecture, and the joint master's in Environmental Governance and Adaptation to Climate Change with the University of Tartu. It says there are no English-taught programmes at bachelor's level otherwise. Intake is once a year, in autumn. International master's and doctoral applicants pay a non-refundable EUR 100 application fee, except where the page lists an exemption.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your EMU programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Estonian University of Life Sciences (EMU) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
