How Flinders handles TOEFL scores

Flinders asks you to select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when registering for TOEFL iBT, and says this is required for your result to be valid for Flinders admission purposes. TOEFL, like IELTS, PTE, DET and Cambridge, must be taken at a registered testing centre. TOEFL iBT is one of the tests accepted for the Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration) and (Graduate Entry).

Flinders gives its TOEFL figures on the 0 to 120 scale. Since January 2026 TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score; see the new TOEFL score scale.

For comparison, the same page sets the standard IELTS level at 6.0 overall with 6.0 in speaking and writing.

Your offer and your visa are separate. Home Affairs says that for a TOEFL iBT result to be valid for Australian visa purposes you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register, and it lists TOEFL iBT Home Edition among the online tests it does not accept (Home Affairs English page).

If your TOEFL score is below Flinders' level

Flinders accepts successful completion of a pre-course English program from an approved ELICOS provider, though not for the Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration), Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) or Bachelor of Midwifery. Australian Year 12 or IB with an ATAR meets requirements up to its Level 4 band, excluding nursing and midwifery.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Flinders programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
