Griffith's direct-entry English scores
Scores are from Griffith's English language entry requirements page, which sets direct-entry scores by programme group. Brackets show the lowest component Griffith accepts. Griffith also lists TOEFL iBT on the 1 to 6 scale it says took effect on 26 January 2026: 4.0 for most undergraduate programmes, 4.5 for most postgraduate programmes and 5.0 for postgraduate journalism and communications, each with section minimums.

Entry with English support classes
Some programmes accept a lower score if you take Griffith's in-sessional English support classes, which are free, built into your timetable, about three hours a week and start in week 1. For most postgraduate programmes that is IELTS 6.0 with no component below 5.5 (PTE 47, no component below 39). For stage 1 of most undergraduate programmes it is IELTS 5.5 with no component below 5.0 (PTE 39, no component below 31).
This route is not available for postgraduate law or journalism and communications, undergraduate law, music, animation or psychology, the International Foundation Year or advanced entry. For advanced entry English requirements, Griffith asks you to contact international@griffith.ie. A validity period for test results is not stated on Griffith's English requirements page.

The Griffith Institute of Language runs a pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course for students who do not yet meet the requirement. It is open from CEFR B1 (IELTS 4.0), runs for 45 weeks in five-week blocks from September to August, and you join at the block that matches your score. Griffith notes that students progressing to an academic programme must also submit an external exam result as proof of English.
IELTS for the Irish study visa is a separate check
This guide covers Griffith's admission requirement. The study visa is a separate check: the Irish Immigration Service sets a visa minimum of IELTS Academic 5.0 (PTE Academic 30) for courses other than second-level, foundation or English language courses, and says your college's own minimum may be different. Meeting the visa minimum does not get you an offer; Griffith's score is the one to aim for. Country-level detail is in our IELTS for Ireland guide.
Requirements are set per intake and can change. Check the Griffith College English language page and your course page before you book a test. Read on 8 October 2026.
