What TOEFL score do you need for Holmes Institute?

TOEFL is one of four tests Holmes approves, alongside IELTS, PTE and Cambridge English. The policy gives overall TOEFL ranges only and does not state a validity period.

Holmes gives its TOEFL figures on the 0 to 120 scale. Since January 2026 TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score; see the new TOEFL score scale.

For comparison, the same policy sets IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5) for diploma and bachelor's courses and 6.5 (no band below 6.0) for the accounting, information systems and cyber security masters.

Your offer and your visa are separate. Home Affairs says that for a TOEFL iBT result to be valid for Australian visa purposes you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register, and it lists TOEFL iBT Home Edition among the online tests it does not accept (Home Affairs English page).

Holmes also accepts its own Holmes English Placement Test. If you meet the academic criteria but fall short of the English criteria by an IELTS level of 0.5 or more, the policy says you may be offered a place subject to completing an English for Academic Purposes or equivalent enabling course, run by Oxford House College, before you start.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Holmes programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
