Visa English requirements

Do you need IELTS for a Hong Kong student visa?

Not for the visa itself. The Immigration Department's eligibility criteria for study visas cover admission to an accredited full-time programme and normal immigration requirements, with no English test. The English score comes from your university's admission rules, often IELTS or TOEFL. Documents not in Chinese or English need a certified translation, and processing normally takes six weeks.

What ImmD checks

An application to enter Hong Kong for study may be favourably considered if, among other routes, you take up a full-time locally-accredited post-secondary programme (ImmD: entry for study). You must also meet normal immigration requirements, such as a valid travel document, a clear criminal record and no likelihood of becoming a burden on Hong Kong. The criteria do not include an English test.

Where IELTS comes in

Because ImmD relies on your admission, the English requirement you must meet is your university's. Hong Kong universities publish their accepted tests and minimums; for research degrees under the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, the Research Grants Council asks applicants from non-English-speaking universities for TOEFL or IELTS.

Timing and translations

ImmD normally takes six weeks to process a study visa application once all documents are received, and it will not start until they are. Documents not in Chinese or English must come with a certified translation. Students on full-time post-secondary programmes are normally allowed to stay for the length of the programme, up to six years on entry. Requirements change between intakes and scholarship rounds. Confirm the current rule on the ImmD study visa page before you book a test or apply. This guide is general information, not admissions advice.
