Listening and Reading

ielts.org reports Cronbach's alpha for each 40-item section and a standard error of measurement (SEM) in bands, using SEM = SD × √(1 − r) (ielts.org). For 2024-2025, Listening alphas ranged from 0.83 to 0.95, Academic Reading 0.87 to 0.94 and General Training Reading 0.88 to 0.93.

Writing and Speaking

Examiner-marked sections are checked differently. Comparing original and re-rated 'jagged' performances in 2024-2025 gave inter-rater reliability of 0.92 for Writing and 0.90 for Speaking (ielts.org). Examiners retrain and recertify every two years.

The overall band

ielts.org combines the four sections into a composite reliability estimate, using alpha for Listening and Reading and inter-rater figures for Writing and Speaking to stay cautious. For 2024-2025: 0.97 for Academic and 0.97 for General Training, with a composite SEM of 0.17 and 0.19 bands (ielts.org).

A composite SEM under 0.2 is smaller than the half-band steps in which the overall score is reported. ielts.org says section SEMs should be read against the final half-band scores.
