What ielts.org says
From ielts.org's test statistics page: cases where one of the examiner-rated sections is awarded a score markedly different from Listening and Reading are automatically re-marked. Comparing original and 'jagged' re-ratings of 2024-2025 performances gave an inter-rater reliability coefficient of 0.90 for Speaking and 0.92 for Writing.
ielts.org does not publish how big a gap counts as 'markedly different'.
What the re-mark figures show
ielts.org uses the jagged re-ratings to measure how consistently examiners mark (ielts.org). A coefficient of 1 would mean the two ratings always agree.
| Examiner-marked section | Inter-rater reliability, 2024-2025 |
|---|---|
| Writing | 0.92 |
| Speaking | 0.90 |

How examiners are kept consistent
ielts.org says examiners are trained and certified face to face and must retrain and recertify every two years, and a Professional Support Network monitors them, including through recordings of Speaking tests (ielts.org).
If you still think a mark is wrong, see our IELTS remark guide for the official Enquiry on Results route.
