How far in advance should you book IELTS?

There is no fixed cut-off. IDP India says registration closes once seats fill for a city and date, and that IELTS on computer, with more sessions, often stays open closer to the test day. Book at least six weeks ahead if you need access arrangements, earlier for popular cities and months, and leave time after the test for results and any re-mark or retake.

What the official sites say

IDP India: there is no single cut-off date; registration closes once seats fill for a given city and date. IELTS on computer often has more frequent sessions and may stay open closer to the test day, but popular slots fill early, so book as soon as you can (IDP India). Its FAQ says IELTS on computer runs three times a day, seven days a week, and recommends registering in advance to secure your date (IDP India FAQ).

IDP's declaration adds that submitting an application does not guarantee your preferred date or location; your registration is confirmed in writing by the centre (IDP terms).

Work back from your deadline

Start from the date your university, employer or visa application needs the result. Allow for results (see how long IELTS results take), sending the TRF, and possibly a re-mark, which ielts.org says can take up to 21 days, or a One Skill Retake within 60 days of the test.

Booking early also protects your refund options: the earlier you are, the more of the fee you keep if plans change. Detailed rules are set locally and can differ by country and test centre, so check your booking confirmation or ask your centre if anything here does not match what you were told.
