Where to find dates
British Council: open the booking portal, choose Academic, General Training or IELTS for UKVI, enter your country and city, then browse the available dates and times. IELTS is available year-round, with tests on multiple dates each month at most locations (British Council).
IDP: choose the test, city and date in the registration form, which shows live seat availability (IDP India). IDP India's FAQ says IELTS on computer runs three times a day, seven days a week (IDP India).
Speaking may be on another day
Listening, Reading and Writing are taken together. The British Council schedules Speaking on the same day or within seven days before or after them (British Council). IDP India shows the Speaking time in your candidate login at least two days before the test (IDP India). Keep the whole week free when you book.

Work backwards from your deadline
Results take 1–5 days for IELTS on computer and IELTS for UKVI, 6–8 days for IELTS Online and up to 9 days for Life Skills (ielts.org). Add time to send results to universities, and allow for a possible retake or re-mark if the score falls short.
Booking deadlines and changing a date
There is no fixed registration deadline: IDP India says registration for a date closes when its seats fill, and recommends booking early for popular cities and months (IDP India). The British Council says IELTS on computer offers more choice and late booking options (British Council).
To move a booked date, ielts.org allows one transfer per booking, to a date within three months of the original; a late request may count as a cancellation (ielts.org). Details by provider are in IELTS cancel, reschedule and refund rules.
Booking and results rules are set per country and test centre, and they change. Check the page for the country where you will sit the test. This guide is general information, not official IELTS advice.
