How to choose a centre

Price differs by operator, so in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya you can save ¥2,200 by booking JSAF or Berkeley House rather than Eiken; outside those cities only Eiken runs IELTS (Yokohama, Hiroshima, Fukuoka) or only JSAF (Kyoto). Berkeley House says it tests 2 to 20+ times a month in each city, including weekends and holidays.

IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills are listed only by Eiken; its venue and date search lets you filter by test type to see which of its centres run them. JSAF marks its Tokyo and Osaka centres as offering One Skill Retake (IDP). In Japan the Speaking test is held on the same day as the other three parts.

Booking and ID

Book at Eiken through its link to the British Council's registration system, at Berkeley House on its own site, and at JSAF either on JSAF's site or through IDP. You need a passport valid on test day for booking and on the day. Non-residents of Japan could not sit paper IELTS from November 2024; with paper now ended this no longer matters. Fees, payment and refunds are in our IELTS exam fee in Japan guide.
