How many times can you take the Duolingo English Test?

Duolingo limits purchases: you can buy three tests in any 30-day period, and after you submit a test you must wait for the result before starting another. Each test credit allows three attempts to complete and upload one test, and unused credits expire 21 days after purchase. Broken rules can end a credit early or suspend your account.

How attempts work

Every time you begin the test counts as an attempt. Duolingo's example: if your internet fails twice and ends the test both times, you have used two attempts and have one left on that credit (help centre). Quitting before you finish or upload also uses an attempt, and Duolingo cannot restore it (help centre).

To check whether you can buy another test, count how many you bought in the previous 30 days (help centre). A two-test bundle gives two credits; you have 21 days for the first, then another 21 days after its result for the second (help centre).

When broken rules limit retakes

After a rule violation you can retake on the same credit if attempts remain, but two rule violations on one credit make it expire. Possible misconduct makes the credit expire immediately, though you can appeal. A pattern of rule violations or possible misconduct within 365 days can bring a suspension of up to a year, and evident misconduct, such as an impersonator, permanently blocks the account (help centre, consequences).

See account blocked or suspended and the fee guide for retake costs. Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from ETS or Duolingo.
