How do you verify an IELTS certificate?

Through the IELTS Results Service, a free and secure portal for organisations that accept IELTS. You look up the Test Report Form (TRF) number to confirm the test taker's identity and scores, or receive results sent electronically by test takers. ielts.org recommends checking every result this way. TRFs older than two years can still be viewed, but IELTS will not investigate ones older than three years.

What the IELTS Results Service does

The ielts.org verification page says organisations that accept IELTS can use the IELTS Results Service, which is 'secure, free, and simple to use'. It lets you look up a result by TRF number to verify the test taker's identity and score, download results test takers send through e-delivery, review results on screen, download them in bulk, or set up an API that imports results into your own system.

Your organisation registers through the same page. Multi-factor authentication is now required to sign in. On the score-setting page, ielts.org recommends that 'every result you receive is checked using our IELTS Results Service'.

What to check on the TRF

IDP lists what a TRF carries: the test taker's full name, date of birth, nationality and photograph; the test date, location and module (Academic or General Training); the four skill scores and the overall band; and a unique reference number that organisations use 'to verify the authenticity of the document' (IDP).

Scores a candidate shows you on a results website are not enough. IDP says results available online 'are not official' and are provisional until the official TRF is issued (IDP).

Older results and One Skill Retake

ielts.org recommends treating a result as evidence of English for a maximum of two years, and accepting an older TRF only with proof the person has maintained or tried to improve their English (ielts.org).

A One Skill Retake produces a new TRF with a new number. The One Skill Retake page for organisations says the retake type and skill appear in the top right corner, the original TRF number is included, and the date at the top is the date of the original full test, which matters when you apply a validity period. To receive retake results you edit the 'My Organisation' section of the Results Service.

Frequently asked questions

Can an employer verify an IELTS result?+

Yes, if it registers for the IELTS Results Service. The service is open to organisations that accept IELTS results, not only universities.

What do I need to look up a result?+

The Test Report Form number. The TRF carries a unique reference number that organisations use to check it is genuine.

Can a test taker verify their own TRF in the service?+
