Exemptions for the test

For the Master Next Level Engineering, the page exempts holders of a bachelor's diploma from the UK, US, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, and holders of an accredited international American or British bachelor's diploma. It tells other applicants to email the programme to check whether their high school or bachelor's diploma qualifies.

The International Business page says you may be granted an exemption based on your diploma, and that Dutch diploma holders do not need a test. Chinese applicants to the master's must submit an IELTS result, as no other test is accepted for them.

Motivation letter and interview

For the Master Next Level Engineering, HU also judges your English through your motivation letter and the interview, so a test score alone does not complete the application. For questions about language requirements the page points to stip@hu.nl.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your HU programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
