ICD English requirements by level
From ICD's English Language Competency Policy, section 5.3.2.4.
| Level | IELTS | Other accepted tests |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, Level 8 (e.g. BA (Hons) Business Studies, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance) | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | TOEFL iBT 79, Duolingo 110, Cambridge B2, LanguageCert ESOL |
| Postgraduate, Level 9 (e.g. MA in Accounting and Finance) | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | TOEFL iBT 79, Duolingo 110, Cambridge B2, LanguageCert ESOL |
Other ways to meet the requirement
ICD also accepts a full qualification of at least one academic year taught in English at NFQ Level 5 or higher. For first-year undergraduate entry, recent English grades in international school qualifications count, such as IB English at SL5 or HL4, if obtained in the last two years. The course pages also name Pearson (PTE) and QQI's TIE as tests ICD will consider, without printing a PTE score.
Applicants taught and examined through English in Ireland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia or New Zealand are exempt. India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Bangladesh are not on that list. ICD warns that even exempt applicants may still need a recognised English certificate for the Irish immigration authorities.

Courses, support and how to apply
The MA in Accounting and Finance needs a Level 8 degree in accounting and finance or a related subject such as economics, mathematics or business, or completion of ACCA F1 to F9 with a business degree. ICD's final-year finance pathway leads to ACCA exemptions. Intakes are in September and February, and applicants apply by emailing the college directly.
ICD runs free in-sessional English support, including an English for Business and Accounting Students course each semester, and works with the Centre for English Studies for further language training. It does not run a credit-bearing pre-sessional English course.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your ICD course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where ICD Business School publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
