Accepted tests and the 2-year rule
The stream pages list CELPIP General, IELTS General Training, PTE, TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Alberta's 1 April 2025 update says it accepts the PTE Core test for applications to all streams received on or after that date. For the Alberta Opportunity Stream, results must be less than 2 years old when you submit your application, the age is counted from the date you took the test (not the result date), you must meet the scores in a single test, and a booking confirmation is not accepted.
Entrepreneur streams count the 2 years back from the date you submit your expression of interest instead of your application.

Alberta Express Entry and the 600 CRS points
The Alberta Express Entry Stream needs an active federal Express Entry profile, eligibility for the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades or Federal Skilled Worker programme, and a CRS score of at least 300. It has its own pathways for health care, tech and law enforcement. Under the Comprehensive Ranking System, a provincial or territorial nomination is worth 600 points. To be nominated through Express Entry you must also qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades or Canadian Experience Class programme (IRCC), whose minimums are CLB 7 (FSW), CLB 7 or 5 by TEER (CEC) and CLB 5 speaking and listening with CLB 4 reading and writing (FST) (IRCC). See our Express Entry guide.
For 2026, Alberta's processing page (updated 7 October 2026) shows an allocation of 6,603 nominations, 5,541 already issued. It also says nominations of Francophones at CLB/NCLC 5 in French in all four abilities, and practice-ready physicians, do not count against that allocation. IRCC's provincial nominee language page (modified 23 June 2026) lists IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, plus TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French, and its equivalency charts say results must not be more than 2 years old when IRCC receives your application. For Express Entry, IRCC says you must take the IELTS General Training option and does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake (IRCC); IELTS Academic is not on any IRCC economic-immigration list.
Provincial programmes change often, sometimes with no notice. Confirm the current rule on the Alberta Opportunity Stream eligibility page before you book a test or submit an expression of interest. This guide is general information, not legal or immigration advice.
