What IELTS score do you need as an architect in New Zealand?

The New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB) asks overseas architects on Pathway 3 to prove English if they do not hold a five-year architecture degree from an NZRAB-recognised institution and studied in a country where English is not the first language. The only options are IELTS 7.5 overall with at least 7 in each band, or a letter from a current New Zealand architectural employer.

What NZRAB asks for

From the NZRAB Pathway 3 application form (version 07/2025), which covers offshore architects with New Zealand experience. The form says you must attach evidence of English competence where you do not have a five-year architectural degree from an NZRAB-recognised institution, and that if English is not the first language in the country where you did your tertiary studies you must provide evidence. NZRAB suggests contacting it before you apply if you are unsure.

The form calls the test 'IELTS (professional)' and does not name the Academic or General Training module.

Who Pathway 3 is for

The Pathway 3 page lists the criteria: you hold or have held full registration or a licence in an overseas jurisdiction, have seven years' relevant postgraduate experience, have 12 months' relevant professional experience in New Zealand in the last three years, live in New Zealand, and are proficient in English. Applicants are assessed by interview using a project portfolio.

Overseas architects, designers and technicians not covered by another pathway use Pathway 2, which starts with a Qualifications and Experience Assessment (NZ$700). The current Pathway 2 page does not set an IELTS score, so ask NZRAB what English evidence it expects on that route.

NZRAB does not mention PTE, TOEFL, OET or any other test for Pathway 3.

Before you book

The form gives no validity period for the result, and NZRAB does not say whether it accepts IELTS One Skill Retake.

If you already work for a New Zealand practice, the employer letter may be the simpler route, since it is accepted as an alternative to the test.

Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the NZRAB page before you book a test.
