Do engineers need IELTS for New Zealand?

Engineering New Zealand, the Registration Authority for Chartered Professional Engineers, does not list an IELTS score or any other English test for CPEng registration or for its qualification credential check. It assesses a Washington Accord-accredited degree or equivalent, your competence and New Zealand-specific knowledge. You do not have to be registered to work as an engineer in New Zealand, though some job types require it.

How the CPEng assessment works

Before you formally submit, an assessor checks your draft application and gives feedback. After you submit, a panel of your peers assesses your application against international competence standards, schedules a meeting with you, may ask for more information, gets feedback from your referees and reports to the Competence Assessment Board.

Immigration New Zealand may ask for a letter from Engineering New Zealand confirming you meet the CPEng benchmark. Visa English requirements are set by Immigration New Zealand, not Engineering New Zealand, and are not covered here.

Electrical engineers and future licensing

Electrical engineers may need registration and a practising licence from the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB), a separate body whose rules we have not verified here.

Engineering New Zealand notes that in March 2022 Cabinet agreed to a new licensing regime for engineers doing safety-critical work, which will take some years to implement. Rules may change; check the CPEng page before you apply.
