Sittings and validity

You can use one sitting, or a maximum of two sittings within six months if you scored at least IELTS 7 overall in each sitting (or an equivalent such as IELTS One Skill Retake) and at least 7 in each component across the two.

Results must be from the two years before your accreditation application, counted from the earlier sitting. Older results count if you have since been in continuous practice or continuous tertiary study in exercise and sports science in an exempt country, starting within 12 months of the test. You arrange for the results to be verified with the test provider.

Exemptions

You do not need a test if you completed at least two years of secondary education in English in an exempt country plus a relevant tertiary qualification taught in English in an exempt country; or at least six years of full-time-equivalent continuous study in English in an exempt country including relevant tertiary study; or an ESSA-accredited course within two years before you apply. ESSA's exempt countries are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the UK and the USA.

The policy applies to initial accreditation, not to students or existing ESSA members. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the ESSA page before you book a test.
