What IELTS score do midwives need for New Zealand?

The Midwifery Council of New Zealand recognises two tests for internationally qualified midwives whose first spoken language is not English: IELTS Academic with 7.0 overall and at least 7.0 in writing, reading, speaking and listening, or OET with A or B in each section. Sittings must be within three years before registration, and results must come complete from one of the two tests.

Three-year window and no 'clubbing'

All sittings must be completed within the three years before registration with the Council, so it can verify them with the test provider. Results must be a complete result from one of the two approved tests; the Council says no 'clubbing' of results will be accepted, so you cannot mix sections from IELTS and OET.

Whether IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted is not stated by the Council.

Who has to take a test

The requirement applies if English is not your first spoken language, meaning the language you spoke first, not the one you use most now. The guidelines say you may instead show sufficient education and assessment in English through another process, for example at least four years of secondary schooling and a midwifery qualification completed in English. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the Midwifery Council page before you book a test.
