Accepted tests and validity
Newfoundland and Labrador's policies say the test must have been taken within the past two years with an organisation IRCC approves, and the results must stay valid through the nomination and when you apply for permanent residence. If your results look likely to expire first, the province may ask you to test again. The policies name CELPIP, IELTS and PTE Core as the English tests it verifies; IRCC accepts only IELTS General Training.
For TEER 0 to 3 offers the officer judges your English from written and spoken contact and can request a test; applicants below the minimum are refused. The International Entrepreneur page names CELPIP, IELTS or TEF.

Express Entry Skilled Worker and the 600 CRS points
Since February 2025 you apply through an expression of interest; as the year ends the province has temporarily cut the time to submit an application after an invitation from 60 to 30 days. The Express Entry Skilled Worker category needs a place in IRCC's Express Entry pool, a full-time TEER 0 to 3 job offer, at least 67 points on the NLPNP grid and a valid language test entered in your federal profile. Under the Comprehensive Ranking System, a provincial or territorial nomination is worth 600 points. To be nominated through Express Entry you must also qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades or Canadian Experience Class programme (IRCC), whose minimums are CLB 7 (FSW), CLB 7 or 5 by TEER (CEC) and CLB 5 speaking and listening with CLB 4 reading and writing (FST) (IRCC). See our Express Entry guide.
IRCC's provincial nominee language page (modified 23 June 2026) lists IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, plus TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French, and its equivalency charts say results must not be more than 2 years old when IRCC receives your application. For Express Entry, IRCC says you must take the IELTS General Training option and does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake (IRCC); IELTS Academic is not on any IRCC economic-immigration list.
Provincial programmes change often, sometimes with no notice. Confirm the current rule on the NLPNP Skilled Worker page before you book a test or submit an expression of interest. This guide is general information, not legal or immigration advice.
