GPhC minimum IELTS and OET scores
The GPhC's language requirements page says anyone registering as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician must show a minimum knowledge of English. The scores are in its guidance on evidence of English language skills (June 2025).
Check the GPhC page for the latest guidance before booking a test.
| Test | GPhC minimum | Not accepted |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic (including IELTS for UKVI) | 7 overall, no score below 7 in any of the four areas, one sitting | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills |
| Pharmacy OET (paper or computer) | At least B in reading, writing, listening and speaking, one sitting | OET@Home |
| PTE Academic, TOEFL | Not listed by the GPhC | Not applicable |
Which applicants need an English test
UK-qualified applicants do not usually need further evidence. Pharmacists who must complete the Overseas Pharmacists Assessment Programme (OSPAP) give English evidence when applying to start it, and need IELTS or Pharmacy OET if they cannot show a recent primary pharmacy qualification or recent practice in a mainly English-speaking country (GPhC guidance). The guidance sets the same IELTS or Pharmacy OET requirement for some applicants with qualifications covered by SI 2019/593 and for EFTA and Swiss qualified pharmacists.
See the GPhC's international pharmacists page for the OSPAP route itself. You pay the test fee yourself.

'Recent' means less than two years old when you apply. The GPhC may accept an older IELTS or Pharmacy OET if you show you kept up your English, for example by working since as a pharmacy professional in a mainly English-speaking country with at least 75 per cent of your day-to-day interaction in English.
Scores must come from one sitting, so two attempts cannot be combined; whether IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted is not stated by the GPhC. Other evidence types are a recent pharmacy qualification taught and examined in English in a mainly English-speaking country other than the UK, and at least two years' recent practice as a pharmacy professional in such a country, backed by a detailed employer reference.
