What IELTS score do you need as a veterinary nurse in the UK?

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) does not currently ask overseas-qualified veterinary nurses for evidence of their English level, although it strongly encourages it. If there is significant doubt about your English during registration, you will be asked for more evidence and given the option of passing IELTS level 7 or an equivalent qualification at that level or higher.

What the RCVS says about English

From the RCVS page for overseas-qualified veterinary nurses. You must be able to communicate effectively with clients in written and spoken English, as set out in the Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses.

The page does not say which IELTS module counts for vet nurses or whether level 7 means overall or in each skill. Vets have a separate, stricter rule on the RCVS English language page.

Registration steps

Step 1 is having your qualification assessed with Application Form A (all applicants) and, for many, the more detailed Form B. You need a veterinary nursing qualification recognised by the education ministry where you got it; a veterinary surgeon qualification does not make you eligible to register as a nurse.

Outcomes arrive by email up to eight weeks after you apply and are valid for two years. If your course provider is not accredited by ACOVENE you may need to pass the pre-registration examinations (Step 2) before you register (Step 3).

Should you take IELTS anyway?

Because the RCVS strongly encourages proof of English and can ask for IELTS level 7 if it has doubts, a recent result at that level can avoid delays. UK employers and visa routes may set their own English rules.

Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the RCVS page before you book a test.
