Four pathways, only one needs a test

You meet the standard without a test through the primary language pathway (English is your primary language and all primary and secondary education, plus your vet degree, was taught and assessed in English), the combined pathway (at least two years of secondary education plus your vet degree in English), or the extended education pathway (at least five years of continuous education in English, including your vet degree).

The education must be in a recognised country: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the UK or the US. Everyone else takes the English language test pathway.

Validity, older results and registration

A test result is current for three years. If your scores are older, you can ask for an exemption by showing maintained English through continuous employment as a registered vet, or continuous education, in a recognised country; this does not apply to AVE eligibility applicants.

A migration skills assessment is not registration. Before applying for one you must already hold full registration without conditions with an Australian veterinary registration board, whose own rules are not covered here. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the AVBC page before you book a test.
