Where can I take an official IELTS practice test?

The IELTS partners offer several free official ways to practise: sample questions with answers on ielts.org, an on-screen familiarisation test from the British Council and IDP, free British Council mock tests, and an examiner-marked IELTS Trial Test at some centres. None gives an official score. Booking with the British Council also unlocks scored practice tests in IELTS Ready Premium.

The IELTS Trial Test

A free familiarisation test taken at a participating official location under timed conditions similar to the real test, for Academic or General Training, covering Listening, Reading and Writing. An official examiner marks it and you get feedback; results take 13 days (ielts.org).

Trial Test scores are not official and cannot be used for academic, immigration or work purposes. The British Council runs trial sessions only in some cities, including Dhaka, several Canadian cities, Berlin, Accra, Nairobi, Manila, Edinburgh, Leeds, Oxford, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; you register by emailing the local centre (British Council).

IELTS Ready and IELTS Ready Premium

The British Council's IELTS Ready is a free account with familiarisation material and practice. When you book a test with the British Council you unlock IELTS Ready Premium, free from registration until seven days after your test date, which adds scored mock tests with feedback, full courses and live webinars (British Council). Elsewhere the British Council describes Premium as including 40 scored practice tests (British Council).

How to use them well

Use the familiarisation test a few days before your real test to learn the screens, highlighting and note tools. Use the sample questions and mocks to time each section, and the Trial Test if you want an examiner's view of your Writing.

For a band estimate on all four skills, including Speaking and Writing, try our free IELTS mock test. Like every practice score, it is a guide, not an official result.
