Which matters more in IELTS: the overall score or the section scores?

Both appear on your TRF, and the answer depends on who reads it. IELTS says the overall band is the most reliable indicator of overall proficiency and that skill scores began as diagnostic. In practice many organisations set a minimum for each skill, and visa systems in Canada and Australia judge each skill separately, so your weakest section often decides the outcome.

What IELTS says about the two scores

The ielts.org scoring page says the TRF shows the overall score plus Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and that the overall band 'is the average of the four section band scores rounded to the nearest half band'.

In its One Skill Retake briefing, IDP's global stakeholder manager explains that the skill scores were originally provided 'for diagnostic purposes', that the overall band 'is the best indicator of somebody's capability', and that component-level requirements have made it typical for ability to be 'defined not by their overall language proficiency, but instead by their weakest skill' (ielts.org).

What this means for preparation

If your target sets per-skill minimums, a strong overall band will not cover a weak Writing score. IRCC sets CLB per ability (IRCC) and Home Affairs states a minimum for each component (Home Affairs). Find your weakest skill first and plan around it.

If only the overall band is required, a strength in one skill can offset a weaker one, because the overall is an average.

Frequently asked questions

Can a high overall IELTS score make up for a low Writing score?+

Only where the requirement is overall-only. Many universities and visa systems set a minimum for each skill.

Why does IELTS report four scores and an overall band?+

ielts.org says the skill scores were originally diagnostic, showing strengths and weaknesses, while the overall band combines all four.

Does IRCC use my overall IELTS band?+

IRCC converts each skill to a CLB level separately, so each section score matters.

How is the overall band worked out?+

It is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest half band.
