How Imperial treats Duolingo results

Duolingo scores are only considered valid if the test was taken within two years of your intended course start date. You do not need to meet the English requirement before you apply: if you apply without an accepted test, Imperial will make achieving one part of your offer conditions.

Doctoral students who meet the entry requirement must also fulfil the Imperial College London Doctoral Academic Communication Requirement (DACR) once they start.

For comparison, the same page sets IELTS Academic at 6.5 overall with 6.0 in all elements for the standard level and 7.0 with 6.5 for the higher level, and does not accept IELTS single-score retakes.

If your Duolingo score is short

Postgraduate applicants can also meet the requirement by passing the Imperial College London Pre-Sessional English Programme. The page says the Business School no longer offers its own pre-sessional courses or recognises other pre-sessional courses as a way to meet the requirement. Some applicants are exempt through a degree from certain countries; see the exemption section of the page.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Imperial programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
