University English requirements

What TOEFL score do you need for Indiana University?

Indiana University Bloomington asks international undergraduates for TOEFL iBT 79, including the Special Home Edition, met within the last two years. A TOEFL iBT of 100 also shows you are ready for beginning classes without extra English study. For graduate study there is no single campus figure: your department may require TOEFL and sets its own level. IU Bloomington's TOEFL code is 1324.

How IU Bloomington handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduates must have met the English requirement within the last two years. You can self-report scores for admission, but ETS must send the official report before IU can issue an I-20 or DS-2019.

Graduate students should have ETS report scores directly to IU Bloomington using code 1324. Your department may also ask you to sit the Indiana Academic English Test on arrival, and you must take any English courses it recommends. Associate instructor candidates must meet further requirements, including passing the TEPAIC.

The page gives TOEFL figures only on the 0 to 120 scale; new reports also carry a 1 to 6 score, explained in our TOEFL 2026 score scale guide.

For comparison, the same page sets IELTS at 6.5 for undergraduate admission and 7.5 to be ready for beginning classes.

If your TOEFL score is below IU's level

Completing Level 7 of IU Bloomington's Intensive English Program also meets the undergraduate admission requirement. Freshman and transfer students below the beginning-class level are placed in English courses from their sub-scores: for example, a TOEFL iBT writing score of 23 or lower leads to SLST-T131, Academic Writing for Multilingual Students.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your IU Bloomington programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
