University English requirements

What TOEFL score do you need for Kansas State University?

Kansas State University's Graduate School requires TOEFL iBT 79 on scores earned before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 on later scores. Undergraduates do not need English proficiency for admission, but a TOEFL of 79 or 4.5, including MyBest scores, lets them skip English Language Program classes. Below the graduate minimum, a pathway programme may be an option.

How K-State handles TOEFL scores

For undergraduates, scores cannot be more than two years old, and K-State counts the TOEFL iBT MyBest Score. The Graduate School accepts the TOEFL, PTE and IELTS, but not the TOEFL ITP or the WildCAT EPT. Any non-native English speaker offered a Graduate Teaching Assistantship must meet the speaking requirements in Chapter 1, Section G of the Graduate Handbook.

For comparison, the undergraduate page and the Graduate School page both set IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below K-State's level

Undergraduates can be admitted without proving English proficiency and join K-State's English Language Program, where they are placed in intensive, part-time or full academic study depending on their scores. Graduate applicants below the minimum may be eligible for the Pathway program, and a degree from an accredited US university removes the need for a test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your K-State programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
