LSHTM English bands and accepted tests

From LSHTM's English Language Requirements Policy (version 2026/01, November 2025). Each programme's course page states whether it is Band B or Band C. Tests must be passed within two years of the programme start, scores from different sittings cannot be combined (the IELTS One Skill Retake is the exception), and online tests are refused.

Exemptions and the QLS route for Indian, Pakistani and Nigerian degrees

You meet the requirement automatically if you are a national of a UKVI-recognised English-speaking country, or hold a qualification that UK ENIC rates as equal to a UK bachelor's degree and that was taught in a country on the UKVI list. Canadian nationals are exempt, but non-Canadians who studied in Canada are not.

An English-taught degree from India, Pakistan or Nigeria does not exempt you on its own. Instead, the policy lets applicants taught in English in a country the Home Office does not recognise ask for that qualification to be assessed through the Qualification and Language Service, and every LSHTM programme needs CEFR C1 on that route.

Distance learning programmes and some intensive online MSc programmes waive the test for an English-medium degree from the last five (in one case ten) years, and distance learning also accepts 18 months of work in English. Applicants who do not need a visa may appeal the English condition once they hold an offer.

PTE is the steep one, and the visa

Band B asks PTE 76 in every skill, with no room for one weaker skill, while IELTS allows a 6.5 alongside a 7.0 overall. If a single skill is your weak point, IELTS with the One Skill Retake gives you a second chance at just that skill.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your LSHTM programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
