What IELTS score do you need for the Malaysia International Scholarship?

IELTS band 6.0 or higher. The Ministry of Higher Education's MIS 2026 guidelines accept IELTS 6.0, a TOEFL paper-based score of 550 or the equivalent on other TOEFL tests, or a previous degree taught in English with an official declaration from that university. MIS funds full-time master's and PhD study for citizens of listed countries, with age limits of 40 and 45.

The English rule in the MIS 2026 guidelines

Under eligibility, the MIS 2026 guidelines ask for "good proficiency of English Language", met in one of three ways (MIS 2026 guidelines). The document list asks for a certified copy of the IELTS or TOEFL result, or an official letter from your previous institution declaring English as the medium of instruction.

Who can apply

MIS 2026 is for citizens of the listed recipient countries, including ASEAN members, Commonwealth countries and others such as China, Egypt, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Türkiye and Uzbekistan. Applicants must intend to study, or already be studying, full time for a master's or PhD in Malaysia; current students need at least two semesters left.

Master's applicants must be no older than 40 and hold a CGPA of 3.00 or second class upper; PhD applicants must be no older than 45. Master's by research and PhD applicants also submit a research proposal of at least 1,000 words.

University and visa rules sit on top

The scholarship's IELTS 6.0 is its own threshold. Your university may set a higher score for your programme, and EMGS asks for an English certificate with your Student Pass application. Requirements change between intakes and scholarship rounds. Confirm the current rule on the MOHE scholarship portal before you book a test or apply.
