How The New School handles Duolingo scores

None of the three pages gives a separate Duolingo overall score; the minimums are listed as writing and speaking figures only. The undergraduate and NSSR pages say all non-native speakers of English must submit valid results from a test taken within the past two years.

The undergraduate page notes that students who took any ESL course in high school must submit a test result, and that the Office of Admission may ask for a score after reviewing an application. The Parsons graduate page tells Duolingo test takers to follow its linked instructions to send scores to The New School.

For comparison, the same Parsons pages set IELTS at 7.0, and the NSSR instructions set IELTS at 7.5.

If your Duolingo score is below The New School's level

Graduate applicants at Parsons and NSSR can instead enrol in The New School's English as a Second Language programme before applying; passing Level 6 waives the English test requirement. The NSSR international page adds that a writing diagnostic exam is given at orientation.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your New School programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
