Exemptions

You need no test if you completed at least two years of full-time university study in Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, New Zealand or Australia (branch campuses, franchised and distance programmes excluded), or one year of full-time master's-level study taught in English. Upper secondary English comparable to the Norwegian level can also count.

NHH says other grounds will not be considered, so a bachelor's taught in English in India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh does not exempt you. IELTS One Skill Retake and TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted.

Test age, GMAT and deadline

Scores must be no more than two years old at the application deadline and come electronically from the test provider. Unless you are exempt, you also need GMAT Focus 555, GMAT 10th Edition 600, or GRE with 152 in Quantitative Reasoning. The deadline is 15 February; the portal for autumn 2027 opens on 1 January 2027.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your NHH programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where NHH Norwegian School of Economics publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
