Check the intake before using a score table

Checked on 19 October 2026: NTNU's live page still describes its accepted-test table as applying to 2025–2026 and flags some exemptions for review for 2026–2027. Treat its figures below as the published example, not confirmed rules for a later intake. Ask admissions to resolve that date mismatch before booking.

Use the official Study in Norway finder to shortlist English-taught degrees, then open the institution's own programme page. Save the exact degree, intake, applicant category and admissions URL together; a university-wide summary may not cover a joint programme.

NTNU directs Erasmus Mundus and Joint Nordic applicants to separate programme rules. NMBU's table lists overall IELTS scores without separate skill minima; check your programme for additional conditions. These examples do not establish a country-wide score or guarantee admission.

Both pages list IELTS Academic Online. NTNU also lists PTE Academic Online. Do not assume another test format is accepted merely because its name is similar; verify the exact version on your programme's policy.

Do not assume any English-taught degree creates an exemption. NMBU distinguishes study of English language/literature from other degrees taught in English and sets conditions for recognised prior education. Compare your own documents with the university's exact exemption route.

Your admissions checklist before paying for a test

  • Make one row per application: institution, programme, intake, accepted test version, overall target, each skill target, evidence deadline and official link. Leave an unlisted field as 'confirm', rather than guessing.
  • Check every application against your proposed test. If two programmes use different overall, skill or retake rules, plan for the combination you must meet; do not convert an IELTS requirement into an assumed PTE requirement.
  • Write down your test date and the date against which its age is checked. Leave time for results, submission and a possible retake when choosing a booking.
  • If you intend to use an exemption, identify the exact policy clause and the document proving it. Ask admissions about any ambiguity before relying on it.
  • Save the policy and your confirmation date with your checklist. Recheck both the programme page and the university language page before submitting your application.

Turn the confirmed target into free practice

  • Start with an Academic Reading set and a Listening set. Record the question types you missed and the reason: vocabulary, locating evidence, distractors or answer format.
  • Practise the weakest question type next. Review the explanation before retrying with a different set; track accuracy separately for reading and listening.
  • Write one Task 1 response and one Task 2 response, then compare their structure and supporting details with the sample answers. Keep a short list of recurring errors.
  • Record a Speaking Part 1 answer and listen back for clarity, pauses and whether you answered the question. A strong overall result does not compensate for a required skill minimum.
  • If you choose an accepted PTE Academic route, switch to its task-specific practice hub. Use the institution's published PTE target rather than a conversion as your admissions requirement.

The links below lead to public practice and sample resources. They help you prepare; they do not provide an official test result or an admission decision.

Frequently asked questions

What IELTS score do I need to study in Norway?+

Start with your programme's policy, degree level and intake. The named examples above differ in how they specify overall and skill scores; there is no single target established by this comparison.

Can I use One Skill Retake for a Norwegian university?+

Acceptance differs between the two universities in this guide. Check every institution on your shortlist before choosing a retake; one university's acceptance does not apply to another.

Can I use PTE instead of IELTS?+

The linked institutions publish PTE Academic alternatives, but confirm the exact programme, intake and test format. Use its stated PTE requirement instead of assuming that an IELTS conversion establishes acceptance.
