Exemptions, and the lists that leave out South Asia

You need no test with 60 ECTS of English-taught study at a university in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA, or in a Nordic country; a degree majoring in English; or English at upper secondary level from those six countries.

A bachelor's taught in English also counts if it is from Botswana, Eswatini, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Jamaica, Gambia, Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe. NTNU says this country exemption is under review and may change for 2026-2027 admission. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are not on the list.

Applicants with a bachelor's from Pakistan must also have their transcripts and diplomas stamped by HEC before uploading them.

Deadlines and Norwegian-taught programmes

Language documentation must be uploaded by the application deadline itself: if your deadline is 1 December, so is the deadline for your English proof. Erasmus Mundus and Joint Nordic (N5T) master's set their own English requirements.

Bachelor's and other programmes taught in Norwegian use NTNU's general admission requirements, which ask Norwegian plus English at a lower level (for example IELTS 5.0 or PTE 51).

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your NTNU programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Frequently asked questions

Is IELTS 6.5 overall enough for NTNU?+

Not on its own. NTNU's international master's ask 6.5 in each part of IELTS Academic, so a 6.0 in any skill falls short.

Does NTNU accept PTE?+

Yes. PTE Academic or PTE Academic Online with 62 is accepted for international master's.

Does NTNU accept Duolingo?+

No. NTNU accepts only the tests it lists, and Duolingo is not among them.

Does NTNU accept IELTS One Skill Retake?+

Yes, and IELTS Online too.

Do Indian students need IELTS for NTNU?+

Yes, unless they meet another exemption such as 60 ECTS studied in English in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland or a Nordic country. India is not on the bachelor's-degree exemption list.
