Exemptions

You do not need a test if you finished upper secondary school in Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Fiji, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Malta, Mauritius, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK or the US, or completed a year of English-taught university study in the UK, US, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.

A bachelor's, or a year of a master's, taught in English in a Nordic country or the Netherlands also counts. Applicants from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Liberia, Namibia and the Philippines with an English-taught bachelor's are exempt under conditional country rules. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria are not on these lists, and exempt applicants still upload proof such as their school certificate.

Why the per-skill rule matters

OsloMet's overall score is lower than many Norwegian universities, but the 6.0 floor in every skill is strict: 7.0 overall with a 5.5 in Writing fails. Duolingo is not on the list. TOEFL scores must be sent electronically from ETS to OsloMet, with a copy uploaded to Søknadsweb.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your OsloMet programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
