USN English scores
From USN's English requirements for programmes taught in English. The page covers international master's applicants from outside the Nordic countries and does not set separate bachelor's scores.
| Test | Minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 overall, 6.0 in each component | No more than two years old; must be verifiable |
| TOEFL iBT | 80, or 4.5 on the new scale (taken after 21 Jan 2026) | Home Edition accepted; paper-based 550; code B436 |
| Cambridge | First Certificate B or better; Advanced and Proficiency C or better | No validity rule on the page |
| MELAB | 80 | Listed on the page |
Exemptions and what is not accepted
You need no test if you finished upper secondary education in a Nordic country, or hold a complete bachelor's or master's degree taught in English in Canada, the USA, Ireland, New Zealand, Great Britain, Australia or a Nordic country, physically taught in that country. A degree in English language and literature also qualifies, as does the European Baccalaureate (English Language 1 and 2 at 7.5) and the IB Diploma (English A at grade 3 or English B at grade 5).
Degrees in other subjects taught in English elsewhere do not qualify, and the page says working or living in an English-speaking country does not count. That matters for graduates of English-medium degrees in India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh, who still need a test.

Programme rules and how to check
The page says some programmes may require a higher level and that the programme web page will state it. Remember to assign your test score to USN when you book. The page was read on 4 November 2026 and shows no date for its last edit.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your USN programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
