No medium of instruction route for South Asia

A year of university in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the US, a bachelor's or 60 ECTS of a master's taught in English in the EU/EEA, or a completed master's taught in English can exempt you. A letter of medium of instruction is not enough if the degree was not taught in one of those countries.

UiT states that applicants with a degree from China, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka must document English with a test regardless of the medium of instruction. The exception is a degree where English itself was the main subject, at least 60 ECTS.

Deadlines, fees and how to check

For autumn 2027, the non-EU/EEA portal opens on 15 October 2026 and closes on 15 November 2026; EU/EEA and Swiss applicants have until 1 March 2027. Tests must be verifiable online. UiT offers no preparatory English courses, conditional admission is not possible for students who need a visa, and non-EU/EEA students pay tuition fees in three subject categories.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UiT programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where UiT The Arctic University of Norway publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
