From UiB's English language requirements for master's programmes taught in English, last updated 30 July 2026.

Exemptions
Cambridge results above, the IB with English at Higher Level grade 4 or Standard Level grade 6, and a bachelor's or one year of master's study taught in English in a Nordic country all exempt you from a test.
UiB also lists country-specific exemptions. Nigerian applicants with the WAEC Senior School Certificate, WASSCE or GCE O- or A-level with English are exempt. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are not on UiB's list, so applicants from there need a test.

How UiB checks your score
Upload the official IELTS result with a legible TRF number; UiB verifies it online. For TOEFL, add UiB as a recipient using code 9367 and upload a copy. For PTE, send the score through your Pearson account and upload the PDF.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UiB programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Bergen (UiB) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
