Exemptions

Both levels share the exemptions: applicants exempted under the GSU country list, applicants with at least one year of upper secondary or university study taught in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Great Britain or the USA, applicants with a degree in English language and literature including at least 60 ECTS of relevant courses, and applicants who completed a master's degree taught in English.

A bachelor's applicant can also qualify with an English course of 140 hours per year at a Norwegian upper secondary school. Programmes taught entirely in English have no Norwegian language requirement.

Tuition, deadlines and how to check

Nord's admission FAQ says students with citizenship outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland must pay tuition fees, unless they are exchange students from partner universities or doctoral candidates. All degree students also pay a semester fee. For the main autumn intake, non-EU/EEA applications open on 1 November and close on 1 December, with a document deadline of 8 December. Degree programmes start in August and there is no spring admission.

The FAQ says the documentation deadlines are absolute and exceptions cannot be made. Book your IELTS early enough for the result to arrive before then.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Nord University programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Nord University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
