How NDSU handles TOEFL scores

The Graduate School needs official scores sent electronically to institution code 6474 (no department code), does not accept MyBest scores or TOEFL Essentials, and requires the test date to fall within two years of the application date. The undergraduate page says all scores are valid for two years and must be sent directly to NDSU.

Teaching assistants have their own minimums under the assistantship policy. Grader-only assistants need a total of 4 (new) or 79 (old) and in-class teaching assistants 4.5 or 81. For Speaking, graders need 3.5 or 19 and in-class assistants 4.5 or 23; both need Writing 4.5 or 21.

For comparison, both the undergraduate page and the Graduate School page set IELTS Academic at 6.0.

If your TOEFL score is below NDSU's level

Graduate applicants raised in, or holding a bachelor's degree from, a recognised country where English is the only official language can meet the requirement without a test, though some programmes still ask for a score. Teaching assistants who miss the minimums may qualify by completing LANG 701 or LANG 702, the English courses for international teaching assistants.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your NDSU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
