What TOEFL score do you need for NUS?

For undergraduate admission, the National University of Singapore asks for a TOEFL score of 4.5 in the overall score and in the reading and writing sections. The TOEFL iBT, Special Home Edition and Paper Edition are all accepted, and TOEFL Essentials needs 10. Scores must come from a single test date, MyBest is excluded, and results are valid for two years.

NUS TOEFL minimums

From the NUS English Language Test Scores sheet (updated September 2026), which sets the English requirement for undergraduate applicants whose qualifications call for a separate English test.

Test rules at NUS

NUS accepts only TOEFL scores from a single test date, and MyBest scores are excluded. Applicants who took the TOEFL iBT before 21 January 2026 will be assessed accordingly, the sheet notes, and only scores obtained within the validity period leading up to the start of the academic year are accepted.

On the same sheet, IELTS Academic needs 6.5 in overall, reading and writing; IELTS Indicator and One Skill Retake results are not accepted.

If your TOEFL score falls short

The sheet lists other ways to meet the requirement, including C1 Advanced 180, PTE Academic 62 in overall, reading and writing, and MUET. It does not describe a conditional offer for applicants below the TOEFL minimum.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your NUS programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
