Undergraduate: who must test, and which tests count

NYU requires a test if English is not your first language and, in any of the three most recent completed academic years, you took coursework in another language, took English-support classes (ESL, ELL, IB English B), or were in a bilingual curriculum. It is not required if English is your first language or your last three full years of school were taught entirely in English.

Accepted tests: TOEFL iBT (in-person or iBT Home Edition), Duolingo, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. NYU does not accept TOEFL MyBest or IELTS One Skill Retake, and will not waive the requirement based on SAT, ACT, AP, IGCSE, A-level or IB results. Tests must be taken within the last two years. NYU says it has no minimum scores. See the English Language Testing page.

Graduate: NYU GSAS

GSAS applicants must submit official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores unless they are native English speakers, US citizens or permanent residents, or hold (or will hold) a bachelor's or master's from an institution that teaches in English. GSAS sets no minimum but recommends TOEFL 100 (old scale) or 5 (new scale), Duolingo 130 or IELTS 7; some departments list their own minimums. It accepts the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition and the IELTS Academic online test, but not TOEFL Essentials. For 2027 entry, TOEFL must be taken on or after 15 October 2024. See GSAS test scores.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement NYU sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the NYU Undergraduate Admissions page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
