What IELTS score do you need for PolyU?

PolyU's taught postgraduate admission requirements apply if you are not a native English speaker and your bachelor's was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English. You then need TOEFL iBT 80 out of 120 or 4.5 out of 6 (tests from 21 January 2026), or IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, taken in a single sitting within two years.

Some programmes ask more. The MA in Translating and Interpreting asks TOEFL iBT 96 or IELTS 7.0, or a pass in its own admission test, which only native speakers or holders of an English-medium bachelor's can use. Others, such as the MSc in Industrial Logistics Systems, point back to the university minimum.

At both levels PolyU will not consider IELTS Online, IELTS Indicator, IELTS One Skill Retake or TOEFL iBT Home Edition results for taught programmes.

Indian bachelor's applicants can meet the requirement with 80% or above in Class 12 English (All India Senior School Certificate, Indian School Certificate or Higher School Certificate). For taught master's, a bachelor's from an English-medium institution removes the test requirement; PolyU does not name countries.

PolyU's English pages we read do not set a separate English score for the student visa or permit. Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your PolyU programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
