The task and its timing
Pearson's PTE Core format page says you listen to and read a prompt describing an everyday situation, then give a spoken response. After the audio you have 20 seconds to prepare; a short tone plays and you have 40 seconds to speak. You can take notes while the audio plays. The Score Guide lists 2–4 items for Speaking.
Appropriacy: 0–3
Pearson says appropriacy is about how relevant and suitable your language is to the situation and the person you are addressing, delivered clearly and politely in a formal or informal register as the situation needs.
| Score | PTE Core Score Guide description |
|---|---|
| 3 | The language functions suited to the situation are expressed clearly and politely in an appropriate register, with an appropriate level of detail |
| 2 | The language functions are performed in a mostly appropriate register |
| 1 | Only the simplest common expressions and basic routines, which may be in the wrong register |
| 0 | Only a few very short, isolated, mainly pre-packaged forms that may not relate to the situation |

Pronunciation, fluency and the Academic version
Pronunciation and fluency use the same 0–5 scales as the other speaking tasks, from 'Non-English' or 'Disfluent' at 0 to 'Highly proficient' at 5 (Score Guide). Pearson's tips say try to speak for the whole 40 seconds, and that repeating ideas, correcting yourself or hesitating uses up time and loses points. No credit is given for no answer or an irrelevant answer.
PTE Academic's Respond to a Situation gives 10 seconds to prepare (Academic format page) and scores a content trait from 0 to 6 (Score Guide). The Core task gives twice the preparation time and scores appropriacy instead of content.
