The task and its timing
Pearson's PTE Core format page says to include the main points of the passage in 25 to 50 words, using one or more complete sentences, each with a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end. A word count and cut, copy and paste buttons sit below the box. The Score Guide lists 1–2 items, scored with partial credit, for Reading and Writing.
| Trait | 2 | 1 | 0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content | Good summary; all relevant aspects mentioned | Fair summary; misses one or two aspects | Omits or misrepresents the main aspect(s) |
| Form | 25–50 words | 5–24 or 51–60 words | Under 5 or over 60 words; capital letters; no punctuation; only bullet points |
| Grammar | Correct grammatical structure | Errors that do not hinder communication | Defective structure that could hinder communication |
| Vocabulary | Appropriate choice of words | Lexical errors that do not hinder communication | Defective word choice that could hinder communication |
Content and form decide whether anything counts
Pearson's Core page says that if your summary misinterprets the topic or purpose of the passage, you get no score points on any of the four factors, and the same for fewer than 25 or more than 50 words. The Score Guide's own Form scale is wider, giving 1 point for 5–24 or 51–60 words and 0 only below 5 or above 60. Aim for 25–50 and both readings are satisfied.
Grammar is about whether the basic sentence structure is correct; Pearson says the best responses usually combine a main clause and a subordinate clause (Pearson).

How it differs from PTE Academic
PTE Academic's version takes a text of up to 300 words and needs one single sentence of 5 to 75 words, with content scored 0–4 and form 0–1 (Academic Score Guide). PTE Core's shorter text, 25–50 word target and freedom to write several sentences make it a different task to practise.
