The task
You see a transcript with gaps. The recording, 30–60 seconds long, starts automatically after about seven seconds and plays once. You type the missing word in each gap, and can use the Tab key to move between gaps. You may take notes on the erasable noteboard while it plays (Pearson).
The next item does not start until you click Next, so you have a little time to check spellings after the audio ends.
How it is scored
Content is scored by counting the right words with correct spelling: each correct word spelled correctly scores one point (Pearson). The scoring rule and item counts are from Pearson's PTE Academic Test Taker Score Guide; task details are from Pearson's test format pages. Both read on 30 October 2026. The tips are our own, not Pearson's.
Pearson's Score Guide table lists the item under Listening. Its Listening format page says the item affects listening and writing, so it may contribute to both.
| Item | Per test | Audio | Scoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fill in the Blanks (Type In) | 2–3 | 30–60 seconds, played once | 1 point per correct, correctly spelled word; minimum 0 |

Spelling and accents
Pearson accepts all national spelling variations as long as you use one convention consistently (PTE Academic FAQ). A typing slip that changes the word is still a misspelling. See British or American spelling in PTE.
