What TOEFL score do you need for Rice University?

Scores must come straight from ETS to code 6609. Undergraduate admissions wants results from a single test administration and does not accept MyBest scores, and the Graduate School likewise accepts only the best composite score, not MyBest. The undergraduate page states that the TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted, and the graduate page sets 90 for the iBT or the iBT Home Edition.

For 2026 the Graduate School will not accept the TOEFL ITP Plus as proof of English, though ITP Plus scores or interviews can be sent through Vericant as supplementary material.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS Academic at 7.0 and the graduate page sets IELTS at 7.

Neither page describes conditional admission or a pathway programme. Graduate applicants can instead show English proficiency with a degree from an accredited US high school, college or university, or with a completed (or expected) post-secondary degree from an institution where English is the official language of instruction.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Rice programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
