RISD English requirements by level

From RISD's first-year international applicants page and the graduate application page. Both say English proficiency is a prerequisite for acceptance and give the same three scores. They list overall IELTS scores only.

Waivers

First-year applicants may have the test waived if they completed secondary education where English is the language of instruction and had three consecutive full-time years without ESL, ELL or ENL courses. The waiver form is in the applicant portal.

For graduate applicants, the graduate international page says waivers are granted sparingly to students who can prove fluency; email admissions@risd.edu to ask. It also says TOEFL MyBest scores are accepted for exams taken within one year of each other.

Timing and support

RISD advises taking TOEFL or IELTS well before the deadline, since scores can take three weeks to arrive from the test agency; Duolingo results can take up to four days. Incoming multilingual and international graduate students can join the Graduate Language Intensive, an optional one-credit summer course run by the Center for Arts & Language. It is support, not a substitute for the test score.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your RISD programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
