University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)?

SCAD uses English scores to decide whether you skip ESL classes, not whether you are admitted. IELTS 6.5 with 6.5 in reading and writing, TOEFL iBT 4.5 on the new scale (85 on the old) or Duolingo 120 earns the ESL waiver for first-year and graduate applicants. Otherwise-qualified applicants below these scores can still be admitted and take the SCAD Language Studio placement test.

SCAD English requirements at a glance

Sources: SCAD's graduate international admission information and first-year international admission information, both revised June 2026, and the admission FAQ. The figures are the same for both levels, and they are ESL-waiver benchmarks rather than admission cut-offs. They must come from a single test sitting: SCAD does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores, combined Duolingo subscores or any other superscoring.

The ESL waiver and the placement test

TOEFL iBT tests taken from 21 January 2026 need an overall 4.5 with at least 4.0 in listening and speaking and 4.5 in reading and writing; earlier tests need 85 with at least 20 in each section. If you reach the overall score but miss a section minimum, SCAD reviews you case by case for an exemption; no exceptions are made below the overall score. TOEFL scores can be up to two years old, and SCAD's TOEFL institution code is 5631. The FAQ links PTE Academic alongside TOEFL, IELTS and ACTFL, but neither June 2026 document gives a PTE score that earns the waiver. See the graduate document and the FAQ.

Otherwise-qualified applicants who miss the waiver scores may still be considered for admission. They take a two-hour SCAD Language Studio placement test (listening, structure, reading, vocabulary and writing, plus an interview) at international orientation, which decides whether they need ESL classes and at what level. A student with a waiver who later fails a course because of language problems can be required to take the placement test. See the first-year document.

Other ways to waive ESL, including for graduate applicants

Besides test scores, SCAD lists English as your native language, an SAT reading score of 550 or ACT reading and writing scores of 22 and 8, all high school years at an English-medium school, a GRE verbal score of 153, and completing the SCAD Language Studio less than two years before your degree starts. Graduate applicants with a degree from a college where English is the official language of instruction can qualify too, but this needs SCAD's approval and documentation of the language of instruction, or further proof will be required. India is not named. See the graduate document.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement SCAD sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the SCAD graduate international admission information page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.

Frequently asked questions

What IELTS score does SCAD require?+

IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.5 in reading and writing waives ESL classes. It is not an admission minimum: otherwise-qualified applicants below it can be admitted and take a placement test.

Does SCAD accept the new TOEFL scale?+

Yes. For tests from 21 January 2026 SCAD wants 4.5 overall, with 4.0 in listening and speaking and 4.5 in reading and writing. Older tests need 85 with 20 in each section.

Does SCAD accept Duolingo or PTE?+

Duolingo 120 with section minimums waives ESL. The FAQ links PTE Academic, but SCAD's June 2026 documents publish no PTE score for the waiver.

Can I combine my best section scores for SCAD?+

No. The minimums must come from one test sitting. SCAD does not accept TOEFL MyBest or combined Duolingo subscores.

Is an Indian degree enough to skip ESL at SCAD?+

Not automatically. A degree from a college where English is the official language of instruction can qualify graduate applicants, but SCAD must approve it, and India is not named.
